Students prepare for textile colour innovation final

11/06/2010
An innovative textile design collection inspired by ancient oriental armour has won a De Montfort University (DMU) student the UK final of a high-profile international design competition.

Final year textile design student, Kelly Taylor, beat off competition from four other regional heat winners to represent the UK in the final of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) International Student Design competition.

The competition, which is sponsored by Clariant, was open to undergraduates registered on fashion and textile design courses and asked students to submit an entry which demonstrates the creative, imaginative and original use of colour in either fashion or textiles.

Ms Taylor's winning collection is entitled ‘Chain mail and floral filigrees’; she described it as a collaboration of various historical embroidery techniques and contemporary printing processes.

Susie Hargreaves, chief executive of the SDC, commented: “We’d like to congratulate Kelly and wish her the best of luck in representing the UK in the grand final in October. The Society has more than a century’s worth of knowledge and experience working within the textile industry and we are especially proud of our role working with young people from around the globe on the science of colour. This competition is a good way to explore the innovative ideas and new technologies used by some of the best student designers who really embrace the use of colour in their designs.”

The final will also involve winners from Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Pakistan, Singapore and South Africa. It will take place in London on Tuesday, October 5 at the historical Clothworkers’ Hall. The final will take place as part of Textiles-UK, a new one-day event organised by the SDC with support from two traditional City of London professional associations, The Clothworkers’ Company and The Dyers’ Company.
