Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has told local media it plans to invest $9 billion in an expansion project that will include a considerable increase in its polyester production capacity.

RIL chairman, Mukesh Ambani, said his company would make the investment over the next five years and that it would be "the largest investment in this sector to be made anywhere in the world".

Plans include a 3.6 million tonne-capacity polyester filament yarn plant at Silvassa in the former Portuguese territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
