Aramid-Lenzing FR blend comes top

The Austrian Institute for Physiology at the Medical University in Graz has announced the results of a study it carried out into various materials used in protective clothing for firefighters.

The study included blends of aramid and Lenzing FR, 100% cotton with a flame-resistant finish, 100%
aramid, and a blend of Modacryl and cotton.

Results showed the aramid-Lenzing FR blend as the winner of the study. Afterwards, Lenzing explained that because a lower core body temperature is maintained with Lenzing FR fibre, the wearer has “a higher performance profile”. This increase in performance can be quantified at 16 watts, or the ability to run for one minute longer. A single minute can, of course, be the difference between life or death for firefighters.

The tests also showed that a system of layers protects best, especially if the layers combine flame-resistant and moisture management properties. Lenzing said its FR fibre was suitable for inclusion in a multi-layer protective clothing system because it also offers high levels of skin-friendliness.
