Schoeller gets the bug for insect repellent

Swiss textile technology provider Schoeller Textil AG has brought to market a new finishing technology to help outdoor clothing companies offer wearers some protection from insect bites during summer activities.

The new product, Inzectic, will cause no skin problems, Schoeller insisted at the time of the launch, because the finish is applied
only to the outer side of the fabric.

According to the company, the need for protection from insect bites is intensifying. It has calculated that insects such as ticks and mosquitoes are likely to be particularly rife this in the northern hemisphere and warms that some disease bearing species, such as the African tiger mosquito, which transmits Dengue fever, has been found in some southern European countries.

As well as outdoor enthusiasts, it encourages those who work outdoors to take precautions against bites. “When an insect comes into contact with a fabric surface treated with Inzectic it quickly becomes paralysed and dies,” the company said in its launch statement.

Fabrics with Inzectic have been subjected to the cytotoxicity test of the Hohenstein
Institute, and the tick test of the Institute of Biology Neuchâtel and the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel. “Thanks to the new formula of the finish and a special binding system, the textiles display no biological activity and release no cytotoxic substances,” Schoeller said. “Through this special binding system, the protective function is firmly anchored to the textiles, cannot come adrift and is retained even after numerous washes.”
