Advansa moves to make ThermoCool softer

29/06/2010
Technical fibre and fabrics manufacturer Advansa has announced another new version of its ThermoCool technology. Through its network of licensed yarn texturisers worldwide, the company has now brought to market ThermoCool SoftTech, which it says offers “a cotton touch and softer hand to demanding customers looking for additional comfort without compromising on performance”.

Partners Ductel and Contifibre in Europe and Duwell in Asia have worked with Advansa on the new development. They believe ThermoCool SoftTech will work particularly well in the performance sportswear arena.

The companies have used air jet texturising technology on fine fibres to develop a performance thermo-regulating yarn that replicates at microscopic level the soft structure of cotton to offer a similar hand.

“Cotton is often chosen for sports garments due to a natural and comfortable hand,” Advansa said in a statement at the time of the launch. “However, cotton can deliver very limited moisture management benefits.”

The company’s global action sportswear market manager, Gerard Illeras, said: “Sports garments made of polyester are sometimes blamed for having a rough hand. We are doing our best to deliver materials that will end up providing a technical garment in which quality will not just be assessed by the performance but also from the sense of the touch.”

ThermoCool garments have a fibre mix that provides evaporative cooling, designed to keep the user dry and cool when the body temperature increases, and also thermo-buffering properties to help keep the user warm when the temperature decreases. Through this, a garment helps to thermo-regulate the body temperature throughout all of the exercise period, in high or low activity phases, so that the wearer remains in the comfort zone without the body overheating and without the undesirable post-exercise chill effect.

SoftTech was successfully tested by the Czech Olympic team in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver earlier this year for first-layer garments and was reported to offer outstanding performance and comfort. “We believe that this product is a firm candidate to make its way into the top segment of performance apparel for fitness where the contact perception of the garment with the skin is an important value,” concluded Mr Illeras.

Advansa will provide garment makers with an exclusive SoftTech hangtag.
