Outdoor opens to news of booming industry

New sales forecasts indicate that the outdoor sector is booming, according to David Udberg, president of the European Outdoor Group (EOG) and chief executive of Lowe Alpine UK. He made his confident prediction to journalists at the 15 July opening of the Outdoor trade fair in Friedrichshafen. Mr Udberg said that the EOG expected European sales to have grown by 2% or 3% in 2009, reaching €6 billion. “Outdoor products are great, and it’s essential that we promote the link with outdoor pursuits. There are more and more signs that our children are starting to adopt the same view,” he said.

The event this year has 868 exhibitors (a 7% increase on last year’s total) who represent 39 countries. Over 200 European and global product launches will take place this year at the exhibition.

Mr Udberg pointed out that the EOG’s figure of around €6 billion was below the €14.1 billion quoted by market research company NPD because NPD includes several sectors not covered by the his organisation, including skiing, hunting and fishing. At the same time, the low-price segment is not typically served by the organisation’s members.
