Why people love the outdoors

In the build-up to this year’s event, the organisers of the Outdoor exhibition in Friedrichshafen commissioned a survey to find out why people engage in outdoor activities. The research by Bayreuth University in Germany questioned 1,720 Germans actively involved in such pursuits, and identified five key motivating factors: mental wellbeing, better health and fitness, the chance to enjoy nature at close quarters, social wellbeing, and the excitement of new experiences.

Because people have such different reasons for taking part, there is an activity to suit everyone: men and women, young and old. As long as manufacturers and retailers are able to address their specific needs, the market will continue to boom, the event organisers said.
