Four big leagues dominate licensed sports goods sales

Retail sales of licensed sports merchandise were worth $12.5 billion in the US and Canada in 2009, according to a study called The Sports Licensing Report.

The market there is dominated by Major League Baseball, the National Football League, National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. The four leagues together account for 65% of the market for licensed sports merchandise in the two countries. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) represents another 8%.
 
Apparel, accessories and footwear account for 48% of retail sales of licensed merchandise based on sports properties. The second largest category is videogames, at 14% of the market.

The study estimated that worldwide retail sales of sports-based merchandise came to $17.5 billion in 2009.
