Ethiopia aims high on garment exports

Ethiopia’s Textile Industry Development Institute has announced plans that it says will help the country increase its garment export revenues to $1 billion within five years.

The institute’s director, Sileshi Lemma, told local media that there were 42 medium and high-level textile enterprises in Ethiopia engaged in export trade at the moment and that they expected a combined export revenue of $100 million this year.

Encouraging these countries to improve their production and increase their focus on export markets would be the key to achieving the $1 billion aim, he said.
