Innovation Prize for smartfiber

German fibre producer smartfiber won the award in the start-up category at the German Innovation Prizes at the start of July.

The panel of judges said it wanted to honour the Rudolstadt-based manufacturer’s commitment to making functional fibres from plant cellulose.

Chief executive of the company that makes smartcel and SeaCell, Michael Kohne, said: “This award is a validation of our tireless research, production and distribution work. We are on the right track, in co-operation with our partners, to achieve modern and customer-oriented products with natural fibres.”

One of the judges, the chief executive of Evonik Industries, Klaus Engel, commented that smartfiber’s products have great market potential because they fulfil two of today’s most important needs: they use resources efficiently and offer health benefits to consumers by, for example, providing the functionality of seaweed in SeaCell and a range of natural products, including zinc, in smartcel.
