Adidas ‘claims back €10 million’
23/07/2010
France had a catastrophic World Cup, finishing bottom of its group after drawing with Uruguay and losing to South Africa and Mexico, scoring only one goal in the process. The team qualified for the finals in controversial circumstances with star striker Thierry Henry deliberately handling the ball in the build-up to the decisive goal against Ireland in a play-off match. There have also been public scandals over the off-the-field behaviour of prominent players.
France Football has reported that since the end of the World Cup, adidas has written to the French Football Federation to present a formal request for a refund on €10 million because sales of replica shirts have fallen short of targets.
Adidas has been the official shirt supplier of the French national team since 1970 but by the time the next World Cup comes around, Brazil 2014, it will have joined Nike’s roster, for a reported €40 million a year.
