Nike to pay into relief fund for Honduran workers

Sports brand Nike and the CGT trade union in Honduras have reached an agreement on supporting the former employees of two outsource manufacturing partners in the Central American country, Hugger and Vision Tex, who lost their jobs last year without receiving any severance pay.

Nike will contribute $1.5 million to a workers’ relief fund to be administered jointly by CGT and other workers’ groups.

The company said it would also work with other Honduran suppliers to offer vocational training programmes and to prioritise hiring of former Hugger and Vision Tex workers as jobs become available over the next two years.

Student groups in the US have run a campaign to secure support for the workers.
