New Zealand wool prices higher

Prices rose at the first substantial offering of wool for the new selling season in New Zealand, with 85% of the 17,800 bales on offer selling, according to local media.

New Zealand Wool Services International, which supplies wool for clients around the world, has said demand for the combined sale of North and South Island wool overcame a strengthening exchange rate, with the price for fine crossbred wool leading the way, firming in price by up to 4% compared to the last sale on July 8.

Longer length fine crossbred fleece fell by up to 3%. Coarse carpet fleece-type wool was up to 2% stronger, with second shear rising 1% to 2%. A nominal offering of long lamb’s wool was up to 7% more expensive, while shorter lines were steady.

Buyers were from China, India, the Middle East and the United Kingdom, as well as carpet mills from western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
