Naturana includes Biophyl in new swimwear collection

German swimwear brand Naturana has included Advansa’s environmentally sensitive polyester polymer Biophyl in the materials mix for a new collection named Irma La Douce.

The company says the new collection, named after a famous 1960s Hollywood film starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, is aimed at fashion-conscious women who put a high value on “extravagance and high-quality materials”.

The fabrics for the new products are supplied by Italian circular and warp knit manufacturer Piave Maitex. According to Advansa, the inclusion of Biophyl is a reflection of the growth in demand for eco-friendly textiles.

Biophyl fabrics are made of polyester yarns that have a less-than-conventional impact on the environment. The carbon dioxide output associated with the production of the polymer is claimed to be 63% lower because the raw materials it uses include less petrol-based glycol and more of a polymer called bio-PDO, which is made of corn sucrose.

Fabrics made from Biophyl still guarantee a high-colour brilliance and softness in touch, as well as excellent stretch and recovery and high levels of comfort. The material absorbs
less water and offers quicker drying than polyamide, Advansa claims. It is stain repellent and has a high durability. Other pluses are its high level of resistance to ultraviolet radiation and chlorine, its ironability and certification according to the Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

The Irma La Douce collection will be available from March 2011 onwards.
