Prime Minister speaks out against apparel manufacturers

Bangladesh’s prime minister has strongly criticised a number of apparel manufacturers operating in the country because of the way they treat their employees.

Local media have reported that garment factory owners are unwilling to pay a higher minimum wage to their workers. This prompted the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, to say the levels of pay apparel manufacturers are offering at the moment are insufficient and inhuman.

She said the government would go ahead with its plans to introduce a new minimum wage structure and added that factory owners and non-profit organisations that support workers could apply for cheap loans from the government to build workers’ accommodation at factory sites.
