The industry could have an approved test for a fabric's wicking capacity some time this year.

Speaking at a seminar organised by Concept III at the start of the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market exhibition in Salt Lake City on August 3, the associate director of product integrity at research and promotions body Cotton Incorporated, Michele Wallace said approval of a test method for wicking could be close.

Ms Wallace, who is also chair of a committee set up by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists on water resistance, absorbency, and wetting agent evaluation test methods, said: "We've been working on a wicking test for a while and I'm confident that this year we can get it done. We have test methods out for ballot among committee members right now and I think it's going to go this time."
