Sports bra development needs more support

Studies in breast biomechanics and the development of bras that offer the right level of comfort and support for women taking part in sports lag far behind progress in shoes and other apparel, according to a serious student of the subject.

Jenny White, a PhD student at the University of Portsmouth in the UK, said on a recent report on ABC television: "Sports bra design is quite far behind other apparel. Sports bras for women are just as important as shoes and socks that don't rub. If we want to encourage more women to take part in sports, this is something that needs to be done."

Studies that she and her colleagues have carried out have suggested that breast movement can affect the way women run and that, the better the support a woman has in the bust, the less stressful the stride she will take while running.

Without support, the researchers found that women hit the ground with more force, which may have negative physiological consequences on performance.
