Coldblack goes ‘on the road’

Swiss Design Prize winner coldblack is to be championed all over the world until April 2011. The textile finish, developed by Schoeller Technologies and Clariant International, will be part of an exhibition comprising various Swiss design feats.

The technology is currently on show at Shanghai World Expo but will later be shown in many cities across the globe including Berlin, Chicago, Geneva, Miami, San Francisco, Shanghai, Strasbourg, Tokyo and Vancouver.

“Swiss Design generates added value”, says exhibition curator Heidi Wegener. “That’s why it’s so important to ensure that this discipline, in which Switzerland does so well, is given wide exposure.”

Coldblack reduces the absorption of sunlight so that dark textiles, in particular, heat up significantly less when exposed to direct sunlight. The technology also offers protection from damaging UV rays.

“The changing climate and the effects of exposure to direct sunlight are hot topics all over the world,” continues Ms Wegener. “Correspondingly, coldblack technology is attracting major interest and we are delighted to help carry this innovation as well as other creative Swiss ideas out into the world.”

The technology has also been nominated for the German Design Award 2011, the winner of which will be announced in February. Previous winners include Audi, BMW and Brad Pitt’s Pink Project for the reconstruction of New Orleans.

“Our nomination for the German Design Award in July came as a complete surprise to us,” says Hans Kohn from Schoeller Technologies.
