Textiles become Vietnam’s to export to Japan
Textile and garments now account for the highest value Vietnamese export items to Japan, according to figures from the country’s General Statistics Office.
Total exports from Vietnam to Japan totalled $4.1 billion during the first seven months of the year, a rise of 25% compared with the same period last year. Textile and export garments accounted for $580 million of the total between January and July, rising 13% year-on-year.
Vietnam’s textile and garment exports to Japan have risen steadily in recent years despite the economic downturn. Japan is the sector’s third largest export destination after the US and Europe. In 2009, garment and textile exports to Japan rose 20% year-on-year to $1 billion and the target for 2010 is $1.2 billion.
