South African airports blame flop teams for poor figures

The company that runs South Africa’s airports has reported disappointment at sales levels in its airport shops over the period during which the country hosted the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Before the tournament began on June 11, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) said it hoped to increase the average spend per passenger by 25%, with items such as replica football shirts and other tournament memorabilia playing an important part.

In the end, average spend from people passing through the country’s airports increased by 15%.

ACSA communications manager, Solomon Makgale, said the strong local currency had been a factor, but also blamed poor results on the field in the tournament from important teams including England, Italy and France for the shortfall.
