Shortage of wool in New Zealand

21/09/2010
Wool exporters in New Zealand are becoming concerned about a shortage of the fibre, according to supply and marketing company Wool Partners International.

The Christchurch-based company cancelled a recent auction after an earlier sale left it with too few bales to sell.

Wool Partners International has told local media that changes in land-use in New Zealand as well as wet weather, which delayed shearing into lambing time, were among the reasons for the shortage. Changes in breeding policy have also lowered the weight of wool yields.

It has organised its next sale for September 30.
