30/09/2010

The University of Leicester, UK, is to stage a series of public events to celebrate the 2012 London Olympics.

The University’s sports and recreation service has organised a series of public lectures, which are free and open to the public. Each starts at 5.30pm and takes place in the Ken Edwards Lecture Theatre 3.

The first lecture will be given by Fiona Fairhurst, CEO of Zero Point Zero One, on October 21. Dr Fairhurst will speak on 'Supersuits: the design and development of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic equipment for sport’. She was previously director of research and development at Speedo, and helped developed the Speedo Fastskin swimsuits. Ms Fairhurst will speak about their development and how studying shark skin influenced the makeup of the material used for the suits. She will also discuss the technological development of ‘revolutionary’ sportswear and how the Fastskin suits caused global controversy in the sport sector.

On November 8, Gary Rawnsley will give a lecture on ‘Media and communications at the 2008 Beijing Olympics’, while on December 2, Harry Rossiter will speak on ‘The limits to human performance’.

Director of sport at the University of Leicester, Colin Hide, commented: "The Olympics is the greatest show on Earth and will excite a generation of sports, and non sports, fans. This lecture series will attempt to make sense of the Olympics both past and present and begin the University’s engagement with London 2012."
