Clothing retailer Gap has announced plans to expand its business outside the US, including ambitions to grow its Athleta sports apparel brand.

Athleta collections include jackets, tops, bottoms, underwear and footwear and, according to the company, are appropriate for enthusiasts of sports ranging from yoga to triathlon. Founded as an independent sports brand, Gap moved to acquire California-based Athleta in 2008.

Gap hopes Athleta will play a strong role in helping it expand in Europe and other international markets, mainly through online sales. The group hopes to double its online sales to $2 billion by 2014.
