Reports from India suggest four textile dyeing plants and a tannery in the city of Erode in Tamil Nadu have been closed down by the local authorities for alleged poor waste management.

The authorities said each of the dyeing plants needed to set up effluent treatment plants on site and had failed to do so.

The tannery had set up an effluent treatment plant but did not have it in operation when inspectors went to carry out an audit.
