A senior figure in the Japanese textile industry has predicted that it won’t be long before China has caught its Asian rival up in terms of textile development.

An official at the Japan Chemical Fibers Association has said China’s aim of becoming a global centre for textile technology development on top of being an important centre of production and consumption is coming to fruition.

He said a recent study had shown that the Chinese government invested more than $30 billion to develop advanced textile technology in the five-year period up to 2010. In addition, China has 15 universities devoted to textile-related research and development, while Chinese students and researchers have brought back up-to-date ideas after studying in the United States.

In contrast, the Japanese government has put a limit of less than $20 million on the textile-related budge of the ministry of the economy, trade and industry.
