Thailand textile sector goes green
According to Thailand’s industry ministry, the textile industry will be increasing its focus on ecological issues as part of the government's Creative Economy policy.
Permanent secretary for industry, Witoon Simachokdee, says the Thailand Textile Institute is in charge of making the industry’s operations more sustainable.
Government figures claim the country’s textile and clothing exports are currently worth approximately $7.2 billion, and exports are expected to rise by approximately 20% next year. However, just 10% of this current total is considered to be “green”, according to Mr Simachokdee. These products are mainly shipped to Japan and the EU, where consumers are willing to pay around 20% to 30% more for sustainable goods.
