Australian farmers grow more cotton

High prices and heavier-than-usual summer rains in eastern Australia have prompted cotton growers there to sow a greater area than ever.

A top-ten cotton producer, Australia grew the fibre on around 200,000 hectares last year. Farmers in New South Wales and Queensland are devoting extra space to cotton and promotions agency Cotton Australia has estimated that the total this season could be 500,000 hectares.

“We’re definitely counting on four million bales plus, which would be worth $2.2 billion,” Cotton Australia spokesman, David Bone, told Reuters.
