Toning shoes: sales could multiply by four in 2010

North Carolina-based sports industry analyst firm SportsOnesource has estimated that sales of specialist toning athletic shoes in 2010 could reach $1.5 billion, more than four times the total for 2009.

However, one of the company’s analysts, Matt Powell has told Reuters he thinks growth in 2011 will be limited to around 20%, and only then if sports and footwear brands keep innovating. There is a feeling in many parts of the industry that too many companies have come to market this year with similar shoes, promising the same benefits of a walking work-out that tones muscles in key areas such as the buttocks. The shoes have sold well, particularly among women, on the premise that they can give wearers a more attractive bottom, although it’s also true that consumer confidence in a shoe’s ability to do this has recently diminished.

But more brands offering products that pronise the same will inevitably push the price of toning shoes down, cutting margins and making the product less attractive to brands.
