Skipper selects silver to stay fresh

The skipper of the Hugo Boss yacht taking part in the Barcelona World Race Challenge, Alex Thomson, has chosen to wear baselayer garments enhanced with active>silver odour management functionality from Swiss textile innovation provider Schoeller Technologies.

The race, which began at the Catalan capital’s port on the last day of last year, is a two-crew, non-stop regatta in which yachtsmen have to sail back to Barcelona after negotiating the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin (the most south-westerly point of Australia), Cape Horn and the Cook Strait. The length of the course is approximately 46,300 kilometres. It will take crews an estimated three months to complete the course.

The technology works by reducing by up to 98.5% the bacteria that can cause unpleasant odours, but without harming the skin, Schoeller Technologies has said. The silver salts used in the odour management product are permanently anchored to the surface of the fabric, the company says and as a result, textiles with active>silver remain “reliably hygienically fresh for longer”.

Before setting off, Mr Thomson explained: “The only things out there are wind, sun, storms, ice, rain and sea. The route is demanding and indeed at times very dangerous. During the race, the everyday things like food, sleep or showering take a back seat. That’s why I chose the most modern technologies for my clothes. Anything that helps me to concentrate better improves my performance and my chances of winning.”
