Vietnam aims to keep its textile industry growing

06/01/2011
Vietnam’s National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) has set the industry a target of $13 billion in export earnings for textile and apparel manufacturers in the country this year after official government figures put last year’s total at almost $11.2 billion, a 23.2% increase over 2009.

Part of the plan for 2011 is to seek out new markets and new customers, but without harming levels of trade with brands who already source in Vietnam.

One boost for the industry will be that domestic production of polyester yarn will commence, with manufacturers eventually able to source on home soil between 80% and 90% of the polyester they consume.

Projects to start domestic cotton production are also possible, with up to 100 hectares earmarked for growing the fibre.
