Chinese sports apparel makers to focus on design upgrades

Industry leaders in China say manufacturers of sports apparel there are improving the construction, functionality and visual appeal of their latest models as they continue their attempts to become more competitive in the domestic and export markets.

Many products, particularly those at the high end, now have smoother and stronger seams because manufacturers are employing four-needle, six-thread flatlock machines instead of three-needle, five-thread variants. This is helping to make garments lighter and more comfortable to wear.

In addition, observers have noted that recent sports tops and pants are also more breathable and have higher levels of wickability. Depending on the activity for which they are designed, styles may be water-, wind- or odour-resistant, quick-drying, warmth-retentive, anti-bacterial or UV-protective. Manufacturers in China are also following aesthetic trends in casual wear.
