Pressure from Turkish manufacturers pays off

The Turkish government has announced an increase of duty on imports of apparel from 9.5% to 52%, and on fabric from 6.4% to 35%. The move comes after intense pressure from Turkish manufacturers.

Early protests have come from exporters in Pakistan who, in turn, have asked their own government to intervene urgently on their behalf. Industry commentators have said that the move, effective from January 18, means orders already in production for delivery to Turkey will not now go ahead.

They have argued that Turkey ought to exempt Pakistan from the new rates to help the country get back on its feet after devastating floods midway through 2010.
