Nike hopes to renew team India uniform contract

03/03/2011

The contract for the Indian cricket team’s uniform sponsorship will be available as the existing agreement with the current official partner, US sportswear brand Nike, is expiring soon.

However, Nike is in talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for renewal.

“We are currently talking to the BCCI to extend the contract as the official team Indian uniform sponsor,” Nike India marketing director Sanjay Gangopadhyay said.

He said Nike has been partnering with the BCCI for the last five years supplying the team uniform.

According to industry sources, Nike’s contract with BCCI is ending in March 2011 and its rivals such as Adidas and Reebok could be in the race to grab the contract.

Nike, which made an official entry into India in 2004, got the official kit sponsorship rights for the Indian cricket team for a period of five years starting January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2010.

After the contract expired in December 2010, Nike got an extension on the same till March 2011 from BCCI.
