World cotton production to reach record levels in 2011–2012

04/03/2011
The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) has predicted that agricultural land devoted to cotton production is projected to rise by 7% globally in the 2011–12 season to 36 million hectares, the largest in 17 years.

Washington-based ICAC said this was in response to record prices for cotton fibre in 2010–11. Farmers are expected to expand the area of land devoted to cotton in all producing countries. World cotton production is projected to increase by 9% to a record exceeding 27 million tonnes. Rising cotton supplies will feed rising demand in 2011–12.

Although prices are expected to decline from current record levels, it is likely that prices will stay substantially higher than the average over the past decade of around $1.32 per kilo.
