Textile companies cease production in tax protest

22/03/2011
Textile manufacturers in Pakistan have halted production in protest against an increase in the country’s general sales tax to 17.5% and a new tax that the government has imposed at 15% as a surcharge to help it rebuild after the devastating floods of 2010.

Chairman of the Punjab division of the Pakistan Yarn Merchants Association, Syed Fahim Mehmood Shah, has said companies will continue with these protests until the government withdraws its demands.
