Nike donates apparel to Japan disaster victims
US sportswear brand Nike has announced that it will donate $1 million to Japan earthquake relief efforts, plus an additional $250,000 worth of footwear and apparel for victims of the disaster.
The company has about 26 contract factories in Japan, mainly producing products for consumption in the country.
Mary M. Remuzzi, director of Nike global corporate communications said: “Other cash recipients will be decided later. We’ve been in Japan for a long time. It’s a big community for us. We have a long-time commitment there and this is a further commitment to that end.”
Nike has stated that all its employees in Japan are accounted for and safe, and that the company is working with relief agencies to assist however it can.
The group’s organisation and assets in Japan haven’t been significantly hit. Nike’s management has said that it is too early to assess the financial impact of the disaster on the company’s business, but they anticipate that it will negatively affect revenues and profits.
