Patagonia puts lightest-weight fabric into new down shirt
24/03/2011
Retailing for $250 each, the women's and men's shirts come in four colour-choices each. Fog grey and raven black are colours for both, and in addition women can choose cerise or prickly pear green, while the men's extra options are Bali blue and light gecko green.
The brand's senior alpine designer, Eric Rice, has said of the product: "This shirt weighs less than 170 grammes and compresses down to about the size of an orange. This is the lightest-weight fabric in our technical line. It is half the weight of down sweater fabric and it is twice as strong. The cool thing on this piece is not only aesthetic, although it does have a kind of unique [ribbed effect] look to it. It also serves a function. There is such a small amount of down in it, it requires smaller quilting to stabilise the down so it doesn't create any cold spots. It's a really versatile piece. It's one of those pieces that you can wear in real cold conditions as a mid-layer, or in milder conditions you can wear it as an outerwear piece. You can even sleep with it on in your three-season sleeping bag and extend your bag into a four-season bag."
