Nike to remain sponsor of Team India kit

26/04/2011

US sports apparel brand Nike has renewed its contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be the official kit sponsor of the Indian cricket team.

The brand, which has been strengthening its cricket portfolio in India, had first inked a five-year deal in 2005 with the BCCI, which was extended till March this year. Nike will also be the official licensee for apparel merchandise for the Indian team. The sportswear maker was in negotiations with the BCCI after its contract ended while its rivals had also been in the race for the sponsorship. But Nike had the first right of refusal since it had an existing deal with the BCCI.

Confirming the development, Nike India’s MD Tarun Puri said: “The extension of our contract for apparel sponsorship with the BCCI is testimony to Nike’s commitment to providing the most innovative products to the Indian cricket team and to the BCCI.”

As per the sponsorship agreement, the Indian cricket team will wear uniforms, practice wear, travel wear, caps, helmets, headwear, eyewear, carry bags, headbands, wristbands and athletic footwear with the Nike logo.
