Prato announces design competition

To promote what it’s calling “the world’s first certified zero-emissions textile product”, the textile industry in Prato in northern Italy has announced a new design competition.

Prato’s chamber of commerce and the city’s textile museum have said the idea behind the contest is to encourage young designers to use Cardato Regenerated CO2 Neutral, fabric made in Prato from recycled wool, for which the manufacturers buy carbon credits to compensate for all carbon emissions generated during production.

Designers aged between 18 and 30 have until June 30 to sign up for the competition, which they can do by visiting a dedicated website, www.cardato.com/contest. Contestants will then have until July 15 to upload their entries to the website, giving all details of the ideas they have come up with. From these entries, the organisers will pick six finalists, announcing the names in September.

In October the six finalists will travel to Prato to create prototype products from their ideas, and in December the winners in two categories—fashion and interior design—will be announced. Each winner will pick up a prize of EUR 2,500.

Chamber of commerce president, Carlo Longo, said on announcing the competition: “The future is in the hands of young designers and we want them to get to know Prato and our Cardato product.”
