New recycling centre will allow Unifi to increase Repreve production

Yarn producer Unifi  has begun production at a new recycling centre in Yadkinville, North Carolina, to increase availability of Repreve. Its Repreve family of fibres are made from 100% recycled materials, reducing the need to use crude oil in yarn production and conserving the earth’s natural resources.

The Yadkinville facility will run two extrusion lines around the clock. Its capacity will allow it to convert up to
20 million kilos of recycled products a year, 14 million kilos of 900 million post-consumer plastic bottles and six million kilos of post-industrial fibre and fabric waste. The process is to convert them into chips to make Repreve polyester yarns. The company estimates that US consumers recycle only 28% of the plastic bottles they use at the moment.

Unifi chief executive, Bill Jasper, said at the opening: “Sustainability is a conscious commitment, and this centre is a perfect example of how research and development and reinvestment can work for this industry in this country.”
