Sports subsidiary wins award for Gap

Retail group Gap has won an award for its specialist women’s sports and athletic division, Athleta. The award comes from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), which has included Athleta as one of its 2011 Hot Retailers. The accolade recognises “innovative retail concepts that drive consumers into shopping centres around the world”, the ICSC explained at the time of the announcement.

Based on a survey of more than 55,000 ICSC members worldwide, Athleta was chosen as one of the “hottest” retail concepts for 2011.

Athleta collections include jackets, tops, bottoms, underwear and footwear and, according to the company, are appropriate for enthusiasts of sports ranging from yoga to triathlon. Founded as an independent sports brand, Gap moved to acquire California-based Athleta in 2008.

Gap has said it values the women’s sports and activewear market at $31 billion and rising.
Originally, it sold Athleta lines through catalogues and online only, but recently began opening stores dedicated to the brand, starting in California. The company plans to open two additional Athleta stores in New York City this summer, and has the goal of opening 50 stores across North America by 2013.
