Reports from Serbia say the Nitex textile company, based in the southern city of Niš, has been sold to Italian apparel firm Benetton. The minister for the economy and regional development, Nebojsa Ciric, and Benetton chief executive, Biagio Chiarolanza, signed the contract, with Serbia’s president, Boris Tadic, and a member of the Benetton family, Luciano Benetton, in attendance.

Mr Chiarolanza stated that over the next few years, Benetton will create a new centre of the Serbian textile industry in Niš, and Luciano Benetton said that this would involve an investment of around EUR 50 million and the creation of up to 3,000 new jobs.
