Cambodia: exports up, but costs rise too

20/06/2011
Reports from Cambodia suggest the Asian country’s garment industry has had its best ever start to a year in 2011.

Figures for the first four months of the year show an increase in the value of Cambodia’s garment exports of 45%, reaching $1.2 billion.
However, local commentators say clothing manufacturing companies have seen a decrease in profits because of increases in production costs compared to 2010.

Ken Loo, secretary-general of the Cambodian Garment Manufacturers Association has told local media: “Looking at the export figures alone leads to an overly rosy picture. Profits in the past 18 months have been in decline, if there have been any at all.”

Rising prices of raw materials, fuel and labour have been the main contributors to the problem.
