Togo plants much more cotton

Togo’s cotton grower's association has it expects growers in the African country to produce 80,000 tonnes of cotton during the 2011–12 season, up from 46,800 tonnes in the season just ended.

The boost in output of raw cotton from the West African state will be due largely to an increase in the amount of land planted, said Essowe Batana, deputy director of the government-controlled New Cotton Society of Togo, said farmers had increased the amount of land devoted to cotton, planting on 88,000 hectares this season, compared to 61,000 hectares a year ago.
