Netherlands region gets new advanced materials centre

07/07/2011
The chief executive of textile manufacturer Ten Cate, Loek de Vries, took part in the official opening of a new research centre in the Netherlands on July 7. The Open Innovation Centre for Advanced Materials (OICAM) has been set up in Nijverdal, in the Twente region, by a network of companies and institutions to focus on sharing knowledge, research and development of materials technology.

OICAM will allow interested parties to set up demonstration projects and production trials of new materials and applications. The idea is that this will stimulate the manufacturing industry in the region and attract knowledge workers, stimulate business start-ups and spin-offs in materials technology. At least five concrete projects should be delivered in the coming two to three years, the people involved have said.

Projects have already been initiated in biopolymers and the development of sustainable nano-coatings for textile materials.
