New lightweight protection from Schoeller

Swiss textile technology company Schoeller Textil has introduced a new product called Ultralight Soft Protection (USP), which it says will enable textile manufacturers to make technical lightweight fabrics “with a previously undreamed of comfortable lightness coupled with wind-proofing and rain-resistance”.

Key properties are that the protective layer USP applies “barely increases” the fabric weight or alters its feel. In fact, Schoeller Textil said that an on-trend functional rain jacket made of a fabric with the new USP technology could pass the rainwear test of the AATCC
(American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists) and still weigh as little as 80 grammes.

USP works by virtue of the company’s elastic schoeller-shape and schoeller-spirit fabrics, which can provide a gossamer-light, protective cover in shades of blue, beige and pink for the first and “understated bi-colour shimmers in a beige and wine sheen or chocolate-brown” for the second.

All fabrics finished with USP technology can be worn next to the skin without a lining, which also helps cut down on additional weight and packing volume, Schoeller has said.
