Farmers unable to cash in on cotton

21/07/2011
Cotton farmers in Burkina Faso have complained that government and regional cotton monopolies, to which they are obliged to sell their crops, have insisted they will pay a price well below market levels.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, farmers in the African country will receive a price that is around 39% of the price of cotton on global markets.

To make matters worse, the monopolies have raised the price of fertiliser by 38%.
