Increased demand for Egyptian cotton

The official season for harvesting cotton began in Egypt on August 11.

Gross production is expected to be 25% higher than last year, reaching 4 million kantars. The kantar is the official measurement for the cotton crop in Egypt; one kantar weighs just over 45 kilos.

Agriculture and reclamation minister, Salah Youssef, said efforts to combat pests have been successful and that crop infection rates have dropped by 50%, compared to last season.

The minister added that cotton marketing companies and agricultural cooperatives have begun to buy crops from farmers at higher prices. There has been an increase in demand of Egyptian cotton in international markets, he said.
