Roundtable discussion on work conditions in outdoor industry

23/08/2011
The European Outdoor Group (EOG) and the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC), a body that focuses on improving working conditions in the garment and sportswear industries, have announced an outdoor industry roundtable to discuss the issues surrounding worker conditions, specifically what constitutes “a living wage”.

EOG said on announcing the event that there has been growing awareness in recent years across the industry about the need to ensure the provision of a living wage to workers across global supply chains and said this applies especially in Asia where, it claimed, legislation sometimes falls short of making sure textile workers will earn enough to provide for their families.

Mark Held, Secretary General of the EOG commented: “The crucial issue is how to calculate a fair wage and what mechanisms can be used to ensure its provision. In short, how can a fair wage policy be implemented?”

The EOG said it sees its role as a conduit to provide the outdoor industry with information and to introduce potential solutions. The roundtable will take place on Thursday, 27 October in Berlin; speakers will include Annanya Bhattacharjee from the Society for Labour and Development in India and Ineke Zeldenrust, Clean Clothes Campaign International Secretariat in the Netherlands.
