Cotton harvest starts in Turkmenistan

26/08/2011
The cotton harvest has begun in Turkmenistan, which is on track to be ninth-largest cotton producer in 2011, according to the National Cotton Council of America.

Around 550,000 hectares of land across several Turkmen provinces have been allocated for cotton in 2011, with the state encouraging farmers to choose the best from around 30 varieties to suit their particular soil and climate. The government sees this as a way of increasing yield and quality.

Newly harvested raw cotton will be sent to 157 reception centres and processed at 36 ginners around the country. The cotton’s quality will be monitored by state experts.

An international cotton exhibition is planned for this autumn in the capital city, Ashgabat.
